Future Plans for Cycling in The Royal Parks

Freewheeling for the future

Cycling is becoming increasingly popular and The Royal Parks is working hard to improve facilities for cyclists. This includes looking at more cycle parking, better signage and the introduction of additional cycling routes within the greenspace of the Parks. The Royal Parks, Transport for London and Local Authorities are upgrading cycle routes and facilities as part of the London Cycle Network programme (LCN+ and the Cycling on Greenways programme funded by Transport for London).

The Royal Parks has adopted The Pathway Code of Conduct as part of our continued Considerate Cycling Campaign.  The code encourages cyclists to be considerate, be safe, be seen and heard, be polite and to stay on track. 

The Royal Parks will continue to run its Considerate Cycling programme during 2011, with cycling events located in many of the parks throughout the summer. Details can be found on the What's On section of the website, as they are confirmed.

Greenwich Park

A complete review of the cycle provision in Greenwich Park was completed in 2009 and the Green CRISP report published. Improvements to park signage, cycle markings and lane access were completed during 2010. Funding has been secured to develop improvements to Blackheath Gate during 2011.

Hyde Park

Studies have been carried out to assess how the Park is being used by cyclists, and the quality of the routes. The first phase of works to improve pathway junctions on Rotten Row was completed in 2010.  Plans to improve surfacing and signage on Rotten Row and West Carriage Drive are currently being developed.

The first phase of cycling lead improvements to Victoria Gate and North Carriage Drive was completed in 2010 and a project to address cycle access during the major events season is currently under development.

Kensington Gardens

A shared-use pedestrian and cycle route trial on Studio Walk is currently being carried out from 2 August 2010 to 31 January 2012, in order to test its suitability as a permanent shared-use route. The route will enable cyclists to connect from Studio Gate to the Broad Walk and will link to existing cycle routes through Kensington Gardens. It will provide an alternative route to the busy Bayswater Road and Kensington Road, and will enable cyclists to enjoy the park and to cycle with children, or practise, in a safe environment.

Improvements to Mount Gate entrance are currently being developed for implementation during 2011.

Regent's Park

Funding has been secured for surfacing improvements to the northern section of the Broad Walk.

St James's Park

A project to improve circulation at Storey's Gate is being developed with Cycling on Greenways funding, for implementation in early 2012.

All Parks

Funding has been secured to undertake a review of cycle signage throughout the parks during 2011-2012.
