Landscape Architect

Royal Parks landscape architect
I provide landscape architecture consultancy services in-house to the parks as well as commissioning external consultants. This means that, on the one hand, I put together management plans (including The Royal Parks Green Flag Applications) for the long term landscape management & maintenance of the parks. There are also significant design and project/contract management and development elements to my job and I help prepare briefs for consultants, commission work, monitor budgets and assist with business planning.

I work across all the parks, and I try to spread my time evenly between them all. This means working with central services at HQ and getting out and about to the parks, to work with park staff. I also get involved with stakeholders and other organisations, such as English Heritage and CABE Space, through the consultation processes for planning and development within the parks. I also line manage other technical staff, so that's another hat I need to wear.

I love my job: it's so varied. The work ranges from discussing detailed practical design issues to more strategic overarching policies and implementation of government directives. I particularly enjoy meeting people and communicating ideas through drawings, images and words. I love the moment when 'the penny drops' and someone sees what you're trying to achieve. Each day is so different and the range of people I work with makes life interesting. I also enjoy a challenge, learning and innovation. My role gives me the scope to do these things and help meet the challenge for the parks - balancing visitor expectations with nature and heritage conservation needs.
