St James's Park, which includes Horse Guards Parade Ground and The Mall, successfully hosted several exciting Olympic and Paralympic events during summer 2012 and entertained thousands of spectators. The Mall hosted the start and finish of the Olympic and Paralympic Marathons, the Olympic Road Cycling Races, the Olympic Race Walk competitions and the end of the Athlete's Parade. Horse Guards Parade Ground was transformed into a world class sporting venue with a temporary 15,000 seat arena that was home to the men's and women's Olympic Beach Volleyball competitions.
The Royal Parks worked closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to develop plans for the venues on The Mall and Horse Guards Parade Ground in St James's Park. These plans were carefully designed to ensure that the impact of each venue and event on the park and on park users was kept to a minimum. Our focus is now on restoring and reopening the sections of the park that were used to host events and we're making great progress.
The Royal Parks began work in August, following the Olympic Games, to restore St James's Park and return it to its pre-Games condition. This work, which is funded by LOCOG, largely consists of over-seeding, turfing and de-compaction.
By the end of November 2012 the restoration work was completed, however the areas of new turf that had been laid were cordoned off to allow the grass roots to establish and the seeds to thrive. The temporary fencing surrounding these areas is now being removed and by the end of March visitors will be able to enjoy accessing the vast majority of the park. Some small areas will continue to be cordoned off during April and then opened up in time for the London Marathon.
