Cycle Route Gets Go-ahead
The Regent's Park Broad Walk is to remain open to cyclists between Chester Road and St Marks Gate on the Outer Circle. This is following a trial to test its suitability as a shared pedestrian and cycling route.
The trial ran from August 2008 and was monitored for 12 months, followed by a six-month evaluation period during which the route remained open. A number of critical success factors were established from the outset and the findings have now been compared against studies conducted within similar green spaces.
As certain success criteria were measured as borderline, it has been decided to maintain the route as shared-use, but to keep this under review.
The route will continue to be monitored and a number of improvements will be made, such as updates to signage and information, and the relocation of a mobile catering kiosk to reduce potential congestion.
The trial was funded in partnership between The Royal Parks and Transport for London, and involved consultation with a range of local stakeholders, park users, organisations representing vulnerable users, and cycling bodies.
Nick Biddle, Park Manager of Regent's Park and Primrose Hill: "We aim to balance the needs of all our visitors and believe that this shared-use pathway provides a safe and green environment for cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy alike."
