The Royal Parks wins award from Civic Trust
The Regent's Park and St James's Park
The Royal Parks were awarded one award and a commendation at Civic Trust Awards gala ceremony at Lord's Cricket Ground last night.
Greg McErlean, Director of Major Projects for The Royal Parks said he was proud to be the recipient of such a well-respected award:
Inn the Park cafè restaurant in St James' Park received a Civic Trust Award for its outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment and The Hub, in Regent's Park, received a Civic Trust Commendation.
"Both these projects represent a considerable investment in The Royal Parks and we are pleased to say they have been extremely successful and well received. They demonstrate that high quality contemporary architecture can co-exist with and enhance historic environments."
Vivienne Newlands, Civic Trust Awards Manager said:
"The Civic Trust Awards are unique in that they do not simply award good design, but also take into account the way in which schemes relate to their settings and to the people that they serve. This year's Awards successfully illustrate the positive impact that the wide-ranging winning schemes have on their local community."
The Civic Award Trust Judges made the following comments on The Royal Parks' winning projects:
Inn the Park, St James' Park:
"This restaurant cafè sits with modesty in the wonderful setting of St. James's Park and has a Scandinavian calm about it. Its geometry fits organically into the pathway network, and the predominantly timber elevations help it to merge almost seamlessly into the landscape. Generous seating is provided alongside the pathway it abuts, allowing all to benefit from it whether or not they are customers. Organised as a series of layers, the terrace provides covered seating for 120 people, and the timber-lined interior provides space for a more formal 100-cover restaurant. Overall, the judges felt that it was a beautifully simple building which does not try to dominate the landscape. Indeed the careful insertion of the project has in turn managed to enhance this spectacular and historic setting."
The Hub, Regent's Park:
"This sports changing room and cafè pavilion in Regent's Park is an excellent building in terms of design, execution and materiality. The bulk of the building is hidden, submerged and banked up to the first floor, which yields a surrounding terrace giving an elevated viewpoint of the sports in progress, with a 360 degree viewing capacity. This is a building that has been designed to be viewed from, it is well mannered and elegant. A wonderful idea!"
