Pelicans in St James's Park
Following recent press coverage of a pelican in St James's Park devouring a London pigeon, the Royal Parks have issued the following statement:
"Pelicans have lived in St James's Park for more than 300 years. There are currently five of these large billed birds - all bred in captivity - resident in the park. Their normal diet is fish, on which they are well fed, being served 12 pounds each day in the early afternoon (plus vitamin supplements)."
Louise Wood, spokesperson for the Royal Parks apologised for any distress caused to onlookers but explained: "These birds will naturally devour other items that appear food-like to them - in this case, a pigeon. Although the RSBP is correct in stating that the main diet of pelicans is fish in the wild, birds used to human contact tend to be much more opportunistic."
