A century of dedication rewarded for Regent's Park gardeners
Four gardeners in The Regent's Park, who between them have notched up a century of dedicated work on the north London landscape have been rewarded with top place in a national competition. The team from Regent's Park took first place at the 30th BALI National Landscape Awards for the Grounds Maintenance of Public Grounds that have free/constant public access.
The success was celebrated by contract Manager Francis Duncan, who has worked in the Park for 30 years, Head Gardener Tom Moss Davis, who has spent 33 years in the Park, Assistant Manager Bob Barrett (28 years service with Serviceteam, with latter years spent in the park) and Contract Supervisor PJ Rattenbury-Neate, who began 26 years ago as an apprentice. The prize was collected at a ceremony at the Park Lane Hilton from Lord (Sebastian) Coe.
The award recognised the high quality upkeep and all-round standards of The Regent's Park, which is one of the most-visited of the eight Royal Parks. The park is managed by a successful partnership of Royal Parks staff, working with committed Serviceteam personnel, who deliver the grounds and landscaping services.
The Regent's Park covers 166 hectares (410 acres) and was designed in 1811 by renowned architect John Nash and includes stunning rose gardens with more than 30,000 roses of 400 varieties. The Park is the largest outdoor sports area in London with 'The Hub' a community sports pavilion and sports pitches, nearly 100 acres available for sports fans of all abilities.
