New Information Point offers improved access and facilities at Pembroke Lodge

The latest phase in a programme of improvements at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park was marked by the official opening of a new visitor Information Point and toilets.

These new facilities complement the larger refreshment kiosk that opened in 2005 on the other side of the main entrance to Pembroke Lodge. In tune with the theme of increasing access and improving facilities, the new toilets are fully accessible by wheelchair users, while cyclists who stop there have been given new cycle racks. As the popular Tamsin Bike Trail runs near to Pembroke Lodge, new wooden posts safely separate pedestrians from cyclists. Other changes include a recycling point and a new picnic area with tables next to the refreshment kiosk giving visitors somewhere to eat al fresco.

Always a popular arrival point for visitors to Richmond Park, the Pembroke Lodge car park, restaurant and gardens now welcome some 300,000 visitors a year, up from 50,000 ten years ago. The various external changes which include new plantings in the Lodge gardens compliment recent investment in catering and hospitality introduced inside Pembroke Lodge whose traditional Sunday roasts and cream-teas remain firm family favourites

Carefully designed to fit in with its surroundings, the new Information Point uses natural materials including wood sourced from Windsor Great Park. It currently opens at weekends and is staffed by volunteers from The Friends of Richmond Park. The Friends plan to open the Information Point for longer once they have enough volunteers. Sheila Hamilton, Membership Secretary for The Friends said: We want all visitors to Richmond Park to be able to learn more about this beautiful place. As well as offering a wide range of information about the Park, the Information Point provides a point of contact with the Friends. Visitors can lend their support by either making donations, giving us a few hours a week of their time, or by joining us and becoming a Friend of Richmond Park.
