The Family Games - Regent's Park
Sunday 19th August 2007 - 12 noon - 4pm, Free

The Family Games is a sports fun day for all the family. Taking place on The Regent's Park on 19th August, The Family Games will let families, groups or teams of any age try out several sporting activities and challenges under supervision. Each group will be given a scorecard to take around the event site so they can test themselves on and be awarded points for skill, agility, speed, strength and endurance.

The event is free to all and will take place around The Hub sports pavilion in The Regent's Park. Spot prizes will be awarded throughout the day and a terrace barbeque will be available.

Previous experience is not needed, just lots of energy and a willingness to have fun. Activities currently confirmed include:

12 noon Parkour (free running). Demonstration and workshops throughout the afternoon.

12.30pm World Vision & NAHT School Aid Celebrity Football Match - a rural African-style celebrity football match. Stars including teenage pop rock sensation and School Aid ambassador Lil' Chris and Freestyle Football Champions Mr Woo and Dan Magness, will play bare foot with commentary by football legend Chris Kamara.

1-4pm Various sports on offer. Challenges and activities may be subject to change but so far include:

  • Free climbing on a 7.5 metre wall (turn Spider-man for the day!)
  • Parkour (free running) workshops
  • Beach volleyball - test how accurately you can spike a volleyball (bikinis optional!)
  • Football - compare your kicking ability against some of QPR's finest
  • Cycling - race a stage of the Tour De France!
  • Baseball/softball - How fast can you pitch?
  • Netball - How many shots can you make in 30 seconds?
  • Basketball - shoot the hoops with coaches from the National Basketball Association
  • American Football - measure the length of your touchdown pass with the NFL
  • Aussie Rules Football - How far can you kick the football? (It's not as easy as it sounds!)
  • Archery - challenge your team mates to hit the centre spot!
  • Tennis - measure the speed of your tennis serve
  • Golf - perfect your swing
  • Rugby - score a rugby try (& test the bungee rope!)
  • Cricket - test your cricketing skills

4.30pm NFL American Football - full contact demonstration match

PLUS...

Sports-mad kids across the country have the chance to 'win' a celebrity for the day at World Vision and the NAHT's School Aid campaign 'Active Aid' event at the Family Games. A handful of lucky winners have the chance to win a celebrity for the day to join their group. To be in with a chance of winning, entrants should visit the www.schoolaid.tv website and in no more than 100 words describe, or send a video clip or photo, of the sporting activity they did to raise money for Active Aid.

4. The Hub multi-sports pavilion and adjacent pitches provide Park provide a focal point for sport and physical activity in central London. It provides changing rooms, social space, meeting areas and facilities for up to 150,000 people a year. It has space for up to 290 people with 20 fully equipped changing rooms, including facilities for referees and those with disabilities. There are areas for education and vocational training, space for quieter sports such as yoga, and a community club room.
