Live8 on screen for Hyde Park

Bob Geldof has today announced 55,000 extra free tickets for the Live8 event in Hyde Park and a later finish time. Following detailed discussions with The Royal Parks, Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police, space for 55,000 additional people has been allocated south of the Serpentine Lake where they will able to watch the concert live on giant screens. The whole event will also now run until 9.30pm.

Sir Bob Geldof said, "This is going to be the biggest event in Hyde Park's history and the biggest ticketed event ever in the UK. The Park will be filled to the brim. In other cities around the country and around the world millions of people will be joining in to make poverty history. It will be one of those defining moments that come around once in a generation."

Live8 organisers have insisted that although Hyde Park is a big place, room is limited due to the massive infrastructure and huge numbers with tickets. Their message to people without tickets is:

Due to the unprecedented size of Live8, Hyde Park will be closed to the public for the first time in a generation. This level of control meant that Live8 has extended its finish time from 8pm to 9.30pm.

Live8 and the authorities were initially concerned about massive crowds turning up at unticketed screens in the Park but the solution, where pairs of tickets will be handed out free of charge at selected venues in the capital and around the UK, has put everybody's minds at rest

The 55,000 free tickets will be available from 3:00pm on Wednesday 29th June (doors close at 7:00pm, reopening at 10:00am next morning). Tickets will be restricted to 2 per person issued on a first come first served basis, at the following locations:

London: Carling Hammersmith Apollo, Stargreen Tickets (Argyll Street),The Dominion Theatre, The Apollo Victoria.

Rest of UK: Birmingham Alexandra Theatre, Bristol Hippodrome, Cardiff International Arena, Manchester Palace Theatre, Oxford New Theatre, Southampton Guildhall,

Ticket holders for Hyde Park could take an hour to get into the Park and through the queuing system. With the event due to run for more than seven hours it will be a long day and people are being advised to prepare accordingly.

Live8 organisers and the authorities have also made it clear that there will be no facility to broadcast sound outside of the concert area and, due to the wall around the site, there will be no view of what is going on for people outside the Park.

Sir Bob and Live8 have arranged 14 free viewing screens around the UK with the BBC, at: Liverpool; Manchester; Oldham; Hull; Wrexham; Inverness; Leeds; Cardiff; Gateshead/Newcastle; Belfast; Jersey; Guernsey; Bournemouth/ Plymouth, and; Birmingham.
