Footballer on the bench

Sit down, tune in, to inspiring tales of the real park life

Arsenal and England footballer Theo Walcott is just one of the voices you may hear next time you sit on a bench in Regent's Park's wildlife garden.

The 20-year-old striker agreed to be interviewed on the role parks played in his younger life. It's part of a sound installation in the wildlife garden, showcasing five park stories. In one of them, "The Royal Parks", Theo explains how the park gave him space to run and play, developing the skills that have landed him a place in the England squad.

In other stories, contributors explain that parks give them somewhere to unwind from the stresses of everyday life. For example, in "Here and in my country" people from outside the UK talk of their amazement at the range of wildlife they see in London. In another story, "Hey this is what we did" volunteers talk about their pride in creating the award-winning garden. In his recording, Theo Walcott explains how he wouldn't be where he is today if hadn't had the park to practice in.

The "sound-bench" is the culmination of the three year Wild in the Parks project run by the RSPB in partnership with The Royal Parks, encouraging local people to get more involved in the wildlife on their doorstep.

Along the way, they interviewed a variety of local people; including schoolchildren, volunteers and community groups. They kept a digital archive of sounds, images and words, recording the impact the project had on individual's lives. Much of the material can be viewed on the Wild in the Parks blog page: http://wildlifegarden.blogspot.com The "sound bench" is located in the Wildlife Garden near the Tennis Courts off York Bridge. To hear Theo and the other recordings, just press one of the five buttons on the bench.
