RHS set to unearth the nation's gardening knowledge with its first ever Dig Together Day (1,5 & 6 September) The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is coordinating its first ever Dig Together Day, this coming September; bringing together thousands of gardening clubs across the UK, to celebrate the knowledge they hold and to inspire new generations to keep the traditions of gardening alive. Every year over 2.2 million children and adults enjoy the benefits of gardening thanks to the RHS' community gardening initiatives. With over 2,800 gardening clubs affiliated to the UK's leading gardening charity, from the Palnackie Shallot Club in Douglas through to the National Vegetable Society and NAFAS*, the RHS is the biggest gardening club of all. Kick starting the Dig Together Day festivities will be a village fete-inspired celebration on St James's Park in London on 1st September, followed by a weekend (5th & 6th September) of local Dig Together Day events organised by the individual gardening clubs across the UK. On 1st September, St James's Park will be turned over to the capital's gardening clubs as they showcase their horticultural talents, pass on invaluable advice and encourage the park's visitors to give gardening a try. Held in conjunction with the Royal Parks, visitors will also be treated to tours of the park's allotments, secrets from the Royal Park's team and hands on activities for children. Completing the atmosphere will be live music, shire horses and bunting. Inga Grimsey, Director General of the RHS said, "We know that our gardening societies and clubs are the custodians of grassroots gardening. They all have fantastic knowledge, advice and tips on everything from protecting the environment through gardening, right down to how to grow giant marrows. But like all clubs they need the support of new members. By organising this day we hope more people will get bitten by the gardening bug and the knowledge these clubs hold will be discovered by new generations." Dig Together Day on St. James's Park will run from 11am - 3pm and is open to all, completely free of charge. Planting demonstrations, advice surgeries, guess the weight of the vegetable competition, allotment tours and free seeds will be on offer.
