The Great Pumpkin Competition

Sketch of a pumpkin

Why not enter our Great Pumpkin Competition?

  • In May, plant one seed in a 10cm diameter plastic flower pot
  • When the plant has grown to about 10cm, plant it out in the ground or put it into a very large pot
  • Cut the top off a large plastic bottle and use the rest of the bottle as a cover to protect your young plant
  • Water every day if necessary and feed once a week
  • Once the pumpkin starts to form, protect it underneath by laying it on straw, on a large tile or piece of paving slab or a large piece of polystyrene
  • Your pumpkin should be fully grown by October
  • Measure round the widest part of your pumpkin and weigh it on a pair of bathroom scales. Get someone to take a photo of you doing this
  • Send in your results and photo to the Bushy Park Young Gardeners' website.

Look out for ideas on this website, on how to use your pumpkin at Halloween.
