Walking Tour: The Vicar's Widow's Death
Thursday 1st Jul 2021
Behind a rather prosaic death notice lies a fascinating story.
Eliza Phillips, as well as being the widow of Rev Edward Phillips, was an animal welfare activist and a co-founder of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The inscription on Eliza’s gravestone is hard to read and until last year her presence in Brompton Cemetery had been largely forgotten.
To celebrate the centenary of the Plumage Act, this lunchtime walk will visit Eliza’s grave and Claire Harris, Brompton Cemetery’s Partnership and Community Engagement Officer, will talk about Eliza and her part in the campaign that led to the passing of the Act.
This is a free event but we welcome your donations. Money goes directly to caring for the Royal Parks.
