The park's close proximity to the River Thames and naturally dry ground made it an ideal location for settlement and has been used since prehistoric times. Today the park has remnants of several key periods of history including Roman, Anglo Saxon, Tudor and Stuart.
In 1428 it became the first Royal Park to be formally enclosed.
