Brompton Cemetery school workshops
Let your students discover the fascinating history and ecology of this Grade 1 listed cemetery with The Royal Parks’ Learning team.
Explore the undergrowth and trees in this beautiful cemetery park using specimen pots and magnifiers, or sweep nets in the summer, to examine the rich biodiversity of its habitats. Discuss adaptations and food chains in the ecosystem and learn how to start classifying invertebrates into different groups. Shift focus upwards and use binoculars to discover the bird inhabitants of the trees.
Maps and orienteering
Develop compass skills and landmark awareness to place yourself accurately on a large-scale map. In teams, complete an orienteering course around the whole cemetery exploring interesting graves as well as the site’s wildlife. Find the most facts in the shortest time while navigating the cemetery’s labyrinth of paths.
Rocks and weathering
Explore the cemetery to find igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks used in the making of monuments and gravestones. Investigate their properties using scientific equipment including magnifying glasses and hand-held microscopes. Conduct tests to determine which erode more easily.
