Victoria has been volunteering in Brompton Cemetery for the last two years. As someone who is profoundly deaf, the experience has let her meet new people and feel a part of the local community.
"I live in West Kensington and I volunteer in Brompton Cemetery, and have done so for about two years. I was looking for something to do in my free time that was worthwhile and I have always liked coming to Brompton since I was a child.
"I absolutely love the place, it is an oasis of calm in a busy city, and there is also of course the wildlife and the range of interesting tombs and the famous people who are buried there. I am a fan of the gothic and the Victorian cemeteries, like Brompton, are some of my favourite places.
"I have undertaken several photographic projects in the cemetery, both for Royal Parks and myself. I also assist at events, showing visitors around and have even done some gardening.
"As someone who is profoundly deaf I can often feel isolated. Volunteering here I have met lots of delightful people from all walks of life. I have also learnt a lot, mostly from going on the tours - I can recognise a lot more birds and trees now!
"One of my favourite places is the Chapel. I love it when I can work here at an event, I think the restoration is really good. I always look forward to volunteering here and hope to for a while to come."
