Royal Parks to feature in More4 documentary

The Royal Parks will feature in an episode of a new More4 documentary series, ‘Secrets of the Royal Gardens', revealing ‘behind the scenes’ insights and stories of some of the capital’s most iconic green spaces.

The four-part weekly series, which features Royal palaces, castles, houses and parks, will be broadcast at 9pm on More4 from Wednesday 2 March. Episode 2, which is specifically dedicated to The Royal Parks, will be broadcast on 9 March.

Narrated by Hugh Bonneville, the episode will take viewers on a journey to a number of the lesser-known locations within London’s eight Royal Parks, such as the hidden Hyde Park super nursery. This is the site at which 450,000 flowers and shrubs are grown to supply all the flower beds across The Royal Parks, including the scarlet pelargoniums which are grown to match the tunics of The Queen's Guard, and are planted in the famous flower beds in front of Buckingham Palace.

Revealing the stories of these iconic spaces are Royal Parks’ staff alongside historians, garden designers, wildlife experts and royal gardeners.

Other stories include a behind-the-scenes look at the shire horses stabled at Richmond Park which deliver crucial conservation works across The Royal Parks, and a look at the work going into an important four-year £8m restoration project at Greenwich Park, called Greenwich Park Revealed, which will restore the park to its original 17th century baroque  landscape that has been eroded over the centuries.

Andrew Scattergood, Chief Executive of The Royal Parks, said:

“We’re delighted to be featuring in episode 2 of this fascinating series and to be sharing some of the Royal Parks’ best-kept secrets. The parks comprise 5,000 acres of beautiful, natural and historic royal parkland across London and although many people will have visited them numerous times before, there are still some amazing stories and little known facts about the parks that people won’t be aware of. We hope everyone enjoys watching the documentary as much as we enjoyed making it”.
