The Royal Parks in photos - July

We look back at July through some of our favourite photos, past and present.

Bursts of colour in the flowerbeds, picturesque sunrises and long, light evenings. Between those moments of calm the parks were abuzz with live music, a state visit, and even the celebration of a sporting triumph. There really is nothing quite like London in the summer, and where better to spend a sunny day than one of the Royal Parks.

Look back on the best of July in photos.

Champions of Europe!

We were excited to welcome the heroic Lionesses to St. James's Park to celebrate their hard-fought victory at the European Championships. The team made history, becoming only the second back-to-back winners of the tournament, and the first English team to win a major trophy abroad.

Crowds lined The Mall as the open top bus procession made its way to the stage at the Queen Victoria Memorial, where the team lifted the trophy.

Around the parks

Prestigious ecology award

We were delighted to win the Climate and Nature Action Award from the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. We were recognised for groundbreaking research exploring the relationships between plant diversity and soil carbon storage across four Royal Parks, providing evidence that diverse plant communities are associated with increased soil organic carbon levels.

Soil can store huge amounts of carbon, so when managed well the ground can potentially sequester carbon dioxide and help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Green Flags all round

The Royal Parks were once again been recognised as some of the best in the country by the Green Flag Awards, the prestigious international award for parks and green spaces.

Congratulations to our teams at Greenwich Park, The Green Park, St. James’s Park, Kensington Gardens and Brompton Cemetery, all of which have been re-awarded their Green Flag status this year, with all other parks retaining their status. The awards are a reflection of the huge amount of work that goes into caring for the parks.

Greenwich Park bandstand refurbishment

The first Sunday in July saw a small celebration event take place in Greenwich Park to mark the re-opening of the fully refurbished bandstand.

The successful refurbishment was a result of working together with the Friends of Greenwich Park, who held their first summer concert of the season straight after the ribbon cutting.

The Royal Parks played an important role in the London Olympics. As well as the equestrian events and parts of the Modern Pentathlon in Greenwich Park, Hyde Park hosted the marathon swimming and triathlon, and St. James's Park was the site for the ceremony to handover to Rio de Janeiro for 2016.

The Rolling Stones perform to a packed crowd of an estimated 500,000 people in Hyde Park on 5 July 1969. It's one of the most famous shows to be held in Hyde Park, and one of a number of unforgettable concerts through the years.

Concerts are still a popular summer attraction in Hyde Park. This year stars including Stevie Wonder, Sabrina Carpenter and Neil Young performed at BST Hyde Park.
